Under Cabinet TV Review - What to Look for in Under Cabinet TVs

Space is always at a premium in the kitchen, so we are always looking for ways to make the best use of space on kitchen counters. One of the best ways to do that is to use no space at all, which is the idea behind under counter appliances. This has the added advantage of keeping the unit out of harm’s way if there is a spill on the countertop. One of the most popular of those is the under counter TV.

What to look for in an under cabinet TV?

These days anyone purchasing a TV needs to be sure the set is digital broadcast ready, at least if you plan to watch it using over the air signals. The alternative is to use cable or satellite, but that usually means that you have to deal with having some type of converter box attached to the set that just takes up that much more space. You should also be aware that the range on digital broadcast channels is slightly less than the old analog channels, so if you had a set you are replacing that had a marginal signal you may have problems with your reception.

Screen Size: You can find units ranging from 7 inches all the way up to 11 or more inches these days. Almost all these units are LCD’s so the screen itself is flat, and on some models the screen can be swiveled up out of the way when the unit is off.

Screen Orientation: Most units have the ability to rotate the screen for best viewing at your angle (one of the disadvantages of LCD displays is that they don’t have a large viewing angle, basically that means that if you aren’t directly in front of the display it may not look as good.)

Built In DVD/CD player: Some units also work as DVD players, or simply CD players so you can listen to music as well. Many also feature AM/FM radios too. Other features you may want to consider include a digital cooking timer, audio and/or video output jacks, or prominent clock display.

Remote control: Make sure the remote control unit has the controls for the functions you want to have control of, like the DVD player and CD player. Also how the control is stowed (does it magnetically attach to the side, or to a refrigerator?)

Location: It should be obvious that these need to be mounted away from the heat and steam of the cooking area. And don’t forget the antenna wire if you choose to use an outdoor antenna, or a feed from a cable or satellite box.

Some of the manufacturers who sell under cabinet televisions include Coby, Audiovox, Sony and Phillips. Check the reviews on Amazon for the specific model you are looking at, the Audiovox units seem to get pretty good reviews.

Finally, if you don’t like what you see in the under cabinet mount models, there are brackets specifically made to hole larger sets off the countertop by mounting under the cabinet.
