Built-in Bookcases
Decades ago, when homes and rooms were smaller, and building by hand was the norm, built-in bookcases were found in most homes. Much rarer now, built-ins are highly valued for the character they add to a room, and for the sense of history and permanence they impart.
There are other reasons to consider adding built-in bookcases to a home or office. Unlike freestanding bookcases, built-ins can be completely customized. A free-standing bookcase will invariably have to sit on the floor; built-ins can flow around a door or a window, or fill a niche in a wall. Any wall is a candidate for a built-in.
Another option is to create a wall, or room divider, by building a bookcase that extends out from an existing wall. Such a built-in could consist of open shelving, an idea place to display art objects or pottery, as they would be viewable from both sides. Or, the bookcase can be backed, creating an effective room divider. The back side can be a great spot to showcase framed art.
Deciding on the function that the shelves are to serve is the first step. For example, if housing electronics in a family room, a built-in bookcase will need to offer a way to conceal the wiring. Adjustable shelves would also be important, as electronic components vary in size.
The shelves themselves can be made from a variety of materials. In general, hardwoods are the strongest, and also the most expensive. Soft woods, while less expensive, are more prone to sagging. Medium-density fiberboard is a good option, as it is relatively affordable. If the built-in is to be painted, MDF is a great choice as it takes paint very well.
As with choosing a piece of furniture, there are many style options available, ranging from traditional to contemporary. In a traditional home, hardwood would be the first choice, and attention to details such as trimming the fronts of each shelf will give the built-in a feeling of elegance and substance in keeping with the other furnishings. A contemporary environment would be complimented by shelves of MDF painted in a bold color with a high-gloss finish.
For designing and building a bookcase, there are many resources available. Local home improvement stores offer books of plans, as well as materials. Plans can also be purchased on-line.
